Esta nueva edición 2022 cuenta con una serie de talleres comunitarios para toda la familia, artistas internacionales, y por primera vez en la historia del Fandango, una cartelera de múltiples noches y DOS camposantos. ¡Le damos la bienvenida y celebramos a todas las almas del San José 2 este 2022! Acompáñenos en estos camposantos históricos del Este de Austin para juntos reflexionar sobre la muerte, celebrar la vida y honrar a todas las almas que se han ido de este plano terrenal. A continuación les compartimos el programa de eventos para este año y ¡asegúrense de reservar sus entradas gratuitas para todas las actividades!
This year’s 2022 edition will offer a series of family-oriented community workshops, a line-up of international artists, and for the first time in Fandango’s history, a program that includes multiple nights in TWO cemeteries. We welcome and celebrate the souls resting at the San José 2 for this year’s celebrations! Join us in these historic East Austin graveyards as we share space to reflect on death, celebrate life and together, honor all the souls that have transitioned. Traigan a sus amigxs y a su familia a uno (¡o a los dos!) de nuestros talleres donde aprenderán a elaborar decoraciones con flores de cempasúchil naturales (marigolds), la flor típica del Día de Muertos. ¡Podrán hacer arcos, cruces, coronas y guirnaldas! Estas piezas luego se llevarán a los dos cementerios San José para adornar ambos camposantos. Acompáñenos al taller matutino el 30 de OCT en el Montopolis & Community Recreation Center o al taller vespertino en Revival Coffee el 29 de OCT. No se pierdan este convivio inolvidable de creatividad e imaginación, ¡registren abajito!

Bring your family and friends to one (or both!) of our community workshops where you’ll learn to make floral decorations with fresh cempasúchil (marigolds), the traditional Day of the Dead flower. You will be able to make arches, crosses, crowns and garlands! These pieces will then be taken to the two San José cemeteries and adorn both graveyards for this year’s celebrations. Join us for our morning workshop at the Montopolis & Community Recreation Center on OCT 30th or our afternoon workshop at Revival Coffee on OCT 29th. This year, Fandango de los Muertos embarks on creating the new annual tradition of bringing together our community--local businesses, local organizations and volunteers--to build large-scale Day of the Dead altars in remembrance of communal tragedies and societal loss. Each year, these large installations will be dedicated to deaths that impacted all of us, whether through direct relationships or through the shared experience of our collective human existence. 2022’s Fandango de los Muertos community altars will be dedicated to:

Para este año, Fandango de los Muertos se embarca en la nueva tradición anual de convocar a nuestra comunidad--negocios locales, organizaciones locales y voluntarios--a construir altares de Día de Muertos de gran escala en memoria de tragedias compartidas y dolor social. Cada año, se dedicarán estas instalaciones masivas a aquellas muertes que nos impactaron a todxs, ya sea de manera directa por relación o indirectamente por nuestra experiencia compartida de vivir una existencia humana colectiva. ProyectoTEATRO, en colaboración con la Universidad de Texas y a la XVI Reunión Internacional de Historiadores de México, arrancan la primera noche del “6to Fandango de los Muertos” con un evento íntimo y filosófico en las penumbras del Cementerio San José 1 (MONTOPOLIS). Esta primera noche explora los cimientos culturales e históricos del Día de Muertos con una charla académica, el premier Estadounidense de un documental mexicano y cápsulas artísticas de música y teatro. Esta primera noche concluye con la decoración del panteón con miles de flores naturales de cempasúchil y velas. ¡Acompáñenos en este coloquio filosófico bajo las estrellas! ProyectoTEATRO, in collaboration with the University of Texas and the XVI International Convening of Mexican Historians, kick off the first night of the "6th Fandango of the Dead" with an intimate and philosophical event in the penumbra of the San José 1 Cemetery (MONTOPOLIS). This first night explores the cultural and historical foundations of Day of the Dead with an academic-driven panel talk, a US premiere of a Mexican documentary and artistic offerings of theater and music. The evening closes with decorating the graveyard with thousands of fresh marigolds and candles. Join us at this philosophical gathering of the minds. Schedule below:

Este año, el Fandango de los Muertos le da inicio a una nueva tradición de ofrecer una segunda noche de programación exclusivamente artística para continuar los festejos de este hermoso fenómeno cultural. Este 2 de NOV, el día tradicionalmente reconocido como el Día de Muertos, lo celebraremos con una impresionante cartelera de artistas locales e internacionales que compartirán sus ofrendas artísticas de rituales espirituales, teatro, música y danza en las penumbras del panteón San José 2. La noche también incluirá un recorrido por el cementerio y la oportunidad de decorar las tumbas con cientos de flores naturales. Les invitamos a que se caractericen usando el Día de Muertos como su inspiración y no se les olvide traer una cobija para que se sienten en el camposanto. ¡Reserven sus entradas gratuitas y recibirán un pan de muerto de cortesía como es de tradición en este fandango cultural.

For this year, Fandango de los Muertos will add a new tradition of hosting a second night of cultural programming focused solely on artistic performances that explore and honor this cultural phenomenon. This NOV 2nd, the day traditionally recognized as the Day of the Dead, will be celebrated with a magnificent line-up of local and international artists that will share artistic offerings of spiritual rituals, theare, music and dance in the candle-lit grounds of the San José 2. This evening also includes a walk through the cemetery and the opportunity to decorate the tombstones with hundreds of fresh flowers. Come dressed in your best Day of the Dead inspired creations and bring a blanket to sit down on the grounds. RSVP your free ticket below and get a complimentary Day of the Dead bread like every year!
